Author: bookskeptic

My name is Jo, I’m in my thirties and I live in London. I’m art historian by education, data geek by profession, omnivorous reader by passion. I really do read everything – it had even happened that, lacking any other reading material, I read German leaflet of Aspirin, it didn’t make it to my top 10 though. More often than not I read fiction the only genre I try to avoid is romance, but looking at the previous sentence if you leave me in a room with only a romance I would definitely read it. I want this blog to be about the books I’ve read, I’m reading now and the books I want to read (by far the longest list of the three). I will be posting reviews, thoughts on books I’m in the middle of and some quotes that I really liked. As I also love going to the theatre and art exhibitions and London is absolutely amazing in that respect there may be an occasional mention of my other cultural endeavours. Paper or e-books? Both, I don’t see them as exclusive as long as they keep us reading both formats are fantastic. All thoughts, comments and suggestions are more than welcome. This Is Going To Hurt – Adam Kay

On June 16, 2018April 10, 2020 By bookskepticIn Reviews6 Comments

I bought this book in London Review Bookshop, that I visited as part of my 12 bookshops for 12 months project. I didn't like the bookshop very much, but this book was a sure crowd-pleaser, I actually noticed it in one of the bookshops I visited earlier this year, but decided to wait as I …

All Involved – Ryan Gattis

On June 13, 2018May 23, 2018 By bookskepticIn Reviews2 Comments

This is a book I bought at the airport I think two years ago, for some reason it was on the shelf with debuts and I was in the mood to support new authors (obviously a mistake, as this is Gattis' third book, nonetheless it worked). The book waited patiently on my shelf, probably because …

Lovecraft Country – Matt Ruff

On June 9, 2018May 14, 2018 By bookskepticIn Reviews4 Comments

I bought this book during my not so successful visit in London Review Bookshop (here you can find links to other more successful parts of my 12 bookshops for 12 months projects). It was one of the books on the tables and what initially caught my attention was the cover, but then I found it …

The Absolute at Large – Karel Capek

On June 6, 2018May 13, 2018 By bookskepticIn Reviews5 Comments

I bought this book during my trip to Toruń to see the exhibition of David Lynch, the museum's bookshop had a pretty decent fiction section and had several Czech books in translation, which is rare in Poland, so I grabbed this one to expand my shamefully small knowledge of Czech literature. This book is a …

May round-up

On June 2, 2018August 30, 2018 By bookskepticIn Thoughts3 Comments

May has been very gracious with the weather, it feels like from early spring we jumped right into summer and I am not going to complain about this. I love the sun and the warmth and I really hope it'll stay this way for another few months. What I cannot believe is that only 3 …

History of Wolves – Emily Fridlund

On May 30, 2018May 13, 2018 By bookskepticIn Reviews3 Comments

This book for me marks the start of spring, in the beginning of the year I had a bit of a reading slump, then my mum recommended to me A Gentleman in Moscow that I loved. But this is the first book this year I picked myself from my shelves and read with the interest I …

Slant Rhymes – Rebecca Norris Webb, Alex Webb

On May 26, 2018May 13, 2018 By bookskepticIn Reviews2 Comments

After finishing Lovecraft Country on a Sunday morning I could not find any other book I'd like to start reading immediately. It usually happens to me when I finish a book I liked, my brain needs some downtime to prepare for the next thing. After trying to start few different books I picked one from …

Flights by Olga Tokarczuk wins The Man Booker International

On May 23, 2018 By bookskepticIn Thoughts3 Comments

I rarely do this, but it is a special occasion so I will give in to a tiny bout of patriotism. Flights by Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Jennifer Croft has won 2018 Man Booker International prize. She is the first Polish writer to ever win the prize, so it is a special occasion. It is a …

Stanfords – 12 bookshops for 12 months – Book Haul

On May 23, 2018March 6, 2020 By bookskepticIn Thoughts10 Comments

As I mentioned in my previous post, I did go a little bit over the top with buying books during my trip to Stanfords. I usually buy up to three books on my bookshop adventures, but this time I got carried away and bought eight, which probably is also a testament to how well the …

Stanfords – 12 bookshops for 12 months – May

On May 19, 2018October 27, 2018 By bookskepticIn Thoughts2 Comments

This time I planned well and managed to get my lazy self to Stanfords within May, it was very helpful that I had no travel planned, as in the previous months I've been out of the UK for at least two weekends. Somehow in my brain going to explore a new bookshop is a weekend …
