2017 summary and 2018 plans

2017 was a year of a book-buying-ban. It didn’t work that well, I had few bouts of buying books (here, here, here and here), altogether I bought 18 books, I got some as gifts, probably more than I bought, but then I also read 90 books last year, so I did make my TBR smaller. That said I am not continuing with the book buying ban this year, enough is enough. I have learned however to be more carefull with my buying, I read 15 out of 18 books that I bought in 2017 already, which means I picked them well, and this is what I’m planning to stick to, buying books to read them, not for the pleasure of just buying books. So that’s one summary and one plan down.

In 2017 I managed to complete #20booksofsummer a month before the deadline and I will definitely participate this year, so that’s another summary and another part of the plan.

I also plan to do some bookshop tourism, I wrote about it few weeks ago here. I’d like to visit one new bookshop in London every month and beware for I plan to share my experience with you 🙂

In 2017 I read 90 books, which is more than in 2016, which was more than in 2015, so I do hope to read around a hundred in 2018, but I don’t want to put a fixed target in place, reading is supposed to be a pleasure not a race. This is also why I won’t be creating a TBR for 2018, let it be a free-flowing year, with no sense of obligation, last year I managed to read 20 out of 40 books that I put on my TBR, which is not bad, but I also noticed that I had to force myself to make progress on the list, so no pressure this year!

For now I don’t plan to participate in any other challenges in 2018, I discovered that as soon as I commit to a challenge I don’t feel like reading at all, again I think my mind doesn’t want to associate reading with pressure and target setting and that’s only fair, it is my escape and relax.

The last part of my plan is to make 2018 a good year, better than 2017, to be more positive and appreciate what I have, rather than being grumpy and think about things I don’t have. It is going to be a good year!

What are your plans? Let me know in comments, share links to your posts if you already blogged about your plans 🙂

Happy New Year!

  1. Great plans and well done on the TBR. My main plan is to get my TBR to one shelf at some point during the year. Ha! But I can try. I also want to continue my Murdoch a Month project and also do 20 Books of Summer again – I usually put TBR stuff on there but use it as an opportunity to mix with other bloggers. Happy reading!

    1. Thank you! I wouldn’t stand a chance getting my TBR down to one shelf in a year, this is really impressive, I’l keep my fingers crossed for you! I am still getting my courage to try Iris Murdoch, I don’t know why, but I feel intimidated. I know you read a lot of her books, what would you recommend for a beginner?
20 Books of Summer is always fun 🙂

      1. Oh, please read the comments so far which confirm she’s very much not intimidating. The Flight from the Enchanter is quite accessible. And the TBR is currently two shelves but was never just one last year!
